BREAKING: One Dead, Others Feared Trapped as Four-Storey Building Collapses in Enugu

Rescue teams battle through rubble as four-storey building under construction comes crashing down in Independence Layout

ENUGU — Sunday, September 13, 2026: Tragedy struck Enugu on Sunday morning after a four-storey building under construction collapsed in the Independence Layout area of the state capital, leaving at least one person dead and others feared trapped beneath the rubble.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that the building collapsed at about 6:00 a.m., triggering an emergency rescue operation involving government agencies and other responders.

One body has so far been recovered from the debris as rescue workers continue searching through the massive pile of concrete and twisted building materials for possible survivors.

The collapsed structure was reportedly an uncompleted building being developed as a hotel. Reports from the scene indicated that several people were inside or around the building when it suddenly gave way.

Emergency responders moved heavy equipment to the scene as excavation and search-and-rescue operations intensified. Some occupants were reportedly pulled alive from the wreckage and taken for medical attention.

The incident attracted residents and sympathisers to the area, with disturbing images and videos showing the structure reduced to a huge mound of rubble.

Authorities have yet to establish what caused the building to collapse. Attention is expected to turn to the structural integrity of the project, construction standards and whether appropriate building approvals and safety regulations were followed.

NEMA said rescue operations remained ongoing as emergency personnel worked to determine whether more people were still trapped beneath the debris.

The latest tragedy is expected to renew concerns over building safety and enforcement of construction regulations, particularly as cases of structural collapse continue to claim lives across Nigeria.

This is a developing story. More details are expected as rescue operations continue.
