Viral Police Video Raises Questions About Ethnic Prejudice

A video circulating online has drawn criticism after a man described as a Nigerian police officer said Peter Obi could never become president because he is Igbo. The clip has raised questions about ethnic prejudice and the political neutrality expected of those entrusted with protecting voters.

The remarks go beyond an opinion about Obi’s electoral prospects. They suggest that a Nigerian’s ethnic identity should determine whether that person can occupy the country’s highest office. Criticism of the video online, however, should not be taken as a measure of what Nigerians as a whole think.

Why the uniform matters

Political arguments are common, and Nigerians are free to disagree about any candidate. A statement attributed to a police officer carries a different weight. Voters depend on the police to protect people across party and ethnic lines, especially during elections.

The officer’s identity and the full context of the recording have yet to be established. Those are matters for the police to examine.

What are Nigerians saying?

The concern raised by the video is straightforward: if an officer believes an Igbo candidate cannot become president because of his ethnicity, can citizens trust that officer to treat all voters equally? Nigerians can disagree strongly with Obi’s politics while still rejecting ethnicity as a reason to rule him out.

The video does not establish the views of the police force, and online criticism does not establish a national consensus. It does, however, bring an enduring question back into public debate: whether every Nigerian, regardless of ethnic background, can expect a fair chance in the country’s political life.
