Elumelu Deepens Seplat Energy Stake With Six Million-Share Purchase Ahead of Chairmanship

LAGOS — Nigerian billionaire investor Tony Elumelu has increased his stake in Seplat Energy Plc after acquiring an additional six million shares in the oil and gas company through an entity under his control.

The transaction further strengthens Elumelu’s financial interest in Seplat Energy just months before he is expected to assume the position of chairman of the company.

The latest acquisition adds to Elumelu’s existing exposure to one of Nigeria’s leading indigenous energy companies and comes at a significant period in Seplat Energy’s corporate development.

Elumelu, one of Africa’s most prominent investors, has substantial interests spanning banking, power, energy, hospitality and other sectors through his various investment vehicles.

His increased investment in Seplat Energy is likely to attract attention from investors as the company prepares for the forthcoming leadership transition.

Seplat Enters New Leadership Era

Elumelu’s expected emergence as chairman places one of Nigeria’s most influential business figures at the helm of a company that has significantly expanded its position within the country’s energy industry.

Seplat Energy has grown from an indigenous oil producer into a major player in Nigeria’s energy sector, with operations covering oil and natural gas.

The company’s profile expanded considerably following its acquisition of ExxonMobil’s Nigerian onshore assets, a transaction that substantially increased its production capacity and asset portfolio.

Elumelu’s latest share purchase means he will enter the chairmanship with an even larger financial interest in the company, closely aligning his investment exposure with Seplat Energy’s future performance.

The acquisition will also keep investor attention firmly on Seplat Energy as the company navigates its next phase of growth under a new chairman.
