Ondo Herbal Drink Tragedy: 24 Deaths Reported After Suspected Toxic Drink

A disturbing health emergency has unfolded in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, where residents became critically ill after consuming a suspected contaminated herbal alcoholic drink.

The incident was initially reported to have claimed 24 lives, with deaths recorded in Araromi-Obu and Odigbo town. At that stage, about 50 people were reportedly hospitalised. Authorities stressed that investigations were still required to establish the exact cause of the deaths.

However, the situation subsequently worsened. The Ondo State Government later confirmed 29 deaths from 60 suspected cases, while other reports placed the death toll at around 30 or more as investigations continued.

What happened?

Residents in communities including Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu, Newtown, Odole, Okele and Oniparaga reportedly consumed locally produced alcoholic/herbal beverages before developing severe symptoms.

According to the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, about 95% of those affected were males aged between 16 and 55 years. Reported symptoms included:

  • Severe headache
  • Body pains
  • Extreme weakness
  • Blurred or impaired vision
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Altered consciousness
  • Sudden deterioration and death

Some affected individuals reportedly became critically ill within hours of consuming the suspected substance.

Is the herbal drink confirmed to be the cause of death?

This is an important distinction.

Although there is a strong epidemiological suspicion that the deaths are linked to a toxic alcoholic substance, health authorities initially stated that laboratory evidence was still required to definitively establish the cause of death.

Blood and urine samples, as well as samples of the suspected drinks, were collected for toxicological analysis.

Recent reports have also indicated that authorities are investigating the possibility of methanol contamination. Police reportedly arrested a suspected producer and recovered substances for forensic examination. The exact toxic substance should therefore not be presented as confirmed until laboratory investigations establish it.

Why can contaminated alcohol be deadly?

One major concern with illicitly produced or improperly formulated alcoholic drinks is contamination with toxic substances such as methanol.

Methanol is not the same as the ethanol found in properly produced alcoholic beverages. When methanol is metabolised in the body, it can produce toxic compounds capable of causing severe metabolic disturbances, visual impairment, blindness, neurological damage and death.

This is why sudden visual problems, severe weakness, confusion or breathing difficulties after consuming an unknown alcoholic product should be treated as a medical emergency.

Government responds

Following the incident, authorities moved to restrict the sale and consumption of locally produced alcoholic drinks and other suspected unapproved concoctions in affected areas. The government has also urged residents to avoid products whose contents and sources cannot be verified.

Police have also commenced investigations, with reports of arrests connected to the production or distribution of the suspected harmful drinks.

A serious warning for Nigerians

This tragedy is a reminder that “natural,” “herbal,” or locally made does not automatically mean safe.

A drink can contain harmful chemicals, toxic contaminants, excessive alcohol concentrations or dangerous ingredients, particularly when it is produced without proper quality control.

People should be especially cautious about alcoholic or herbal mixtures sold without clear information about their ingredients, manufacturer, safety standards or regulatory approval.

When should you seek emergency care?

If someone develops blurred vision, severe headache, vomiting, difficulty breathing, unusual weakness, confusion, loss of consciousness or sudden worsening after consuming an alcoholic or herbal product, do not wait for the symptoms to disappear.

Take the person immediately to a hospital or emergency facility and tell the healthcare workers exactly what they consumed.

Conclusion

What began as a report of 24 deaths in Ondo State has developed into a much larger public-health investigation, with the government later confirming 29 deaths and 60 suspected cases.

The final laboratory findings will be crucial in determining exactly what caused the deaths. Until then, the safest message is clear: avoid unverified herbal and locally produced alcoholic drinks, particularly products whose ingredients, source and safety cannot be established.

This is not just about herbal medicine, it is about food and drink safety, proper regulation and the urgent need to protect communities from toxic substances.
